Study Shows Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen Combinations More Effective Than Opioids for Dental Pain

Results from a study that was conducted by Case Western Reserve University were released in 2018 that confirmed that combinations of acetaminophen and ibuprofen were the most effective means of handling dental pain and that the combinations are more effective than opioids.

The findings of this particular study were published in the publication known as The Journal of the American Dental Association. Dt. Anita Aminoshariae who served – at the time – as an associate professor in the Endodontics Department elaborated by expounding on the fact that narcotic prescriptions should only be used as a last resort.

A Lifelong Dedication

Dr. Aminoshariae has placed an emphasis on helping individuals heal in comfort since the first days she entered the dental industry as part of the United States Navy over two decades ago.

Dental pain is very real and she believed that no patient should have to endure that pain; however, treatments for dental pain should not create new risks for patients.

Prescribing opioids places a patient at risk for developing an addiction. In fact, well over 100 people a day die as a result of opioids, according to information derived from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Aminoshariae committed her life’s work to discovering a better way. She has now succeeded.

Numerous Studies Analyzed

Dr. Aminoshariae reviewed over 450 different studies that have been published over the course of a 30-year period.

In the review of these, she discovered that combinations of acetaminophen and ibuprofen or other types of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) not only served as more effective options for dental pain but that these combinations provided longer levels of pain relief and were much safer options for individuals.

While the news was not new among those in the health field, it was Dr. Aminoshariae that really got people to pay attention to it. Its relevancy in a world where there is an opioid epidemic is exceptionally high.

FDA Approves Combination Drug

Fast forward to the year of 2020. The Food and Drug Administration officially approved the very first combination drug containing acetaminophen and ibuprofen for over-the-counter use in the United States.

The product is known as Advil Dual Action. It is now available nationwide. In addition to being a medication that combines acetaminophen and ibuprofen, it was found that this fixed-dose medication provides superior pain relief compared to taking combinations of a single acetaminophen and a single ibuprofen.

This particular combination medication works in two different ways. First, the ibuprofen targets the pain at its source. While doing so, it reduces the production of prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins actually cause swelling to occur and result in pain signals being sent to the brain. The acetaminophen blocks the pain signals to the brain. This makes it a perfect medication for dental pain. Best of all, this medication may also be used to treat other types of pain in the body.
