What Are the Advantages of Replacing Multiple Missing Teeth with Dental Implants Over Partial Dentures That May Be Removed?

If you are missing multiple teeth, you have – generally speaking – two options. The first is to replace them with a removable partial denture. The second is to have dental implants placed in the mouth to replace them. While both treatment options have their own benefits, many find it more beneficial to opt for the dental implants. These dental appliances allow the mouth to function as naturally as if the teeth were still in place.

Dental implants may be placed as individual teeth or combined through a connection for an increased level of strength. For the purpose and intent of this guide, we are going to outline the advantages of having multiple teeth replaced with implants over a partial, removable denture.

Advantage #1: Loss of Bone Does Not Occur and Refitting May Not Be Necessary

If you replace multiple missing teeth with partial dentures, the jaw will be deprived of the necessary stimulation to maintain the bone levels that are considered to be “optimal”. This causes bone atrophy (or, bone loss). In turn, it could lead to an onset of issues with the jaw.

Once partial dentures are placed, most individuals have to have a refitting done for the new contours of the jaws. None of this happens with dental implants. There is no loss of bone and refitting is not necessary.

Advantage #2: Implants Do Not Have to be Removed and Cleaned

Dental implants are designed to remain inside of the mouth, just like natural teeth. Removable dentures are not. Removable dentures must be taken out and carefully brushed by hand.

Dental implants are ideal because they always remain in the mouth. While it is true that the cleaning process is critical, it is done with the implants in place in the mouth. This makes care far more convenient.

Advantage #3: Dental Implants Are Stable and Do Not Cause Irritation

Removable partial dentures are not a stable fixture, but dental implants are. Dentures must be put into place with an adhesive that sticks to the gums. This often causes irritation and discomfort to the gum tissue. Additionally, removable dentures often slip and slide in the mouth.

This could result in pain, the development of sores, and even infection to develop in the mouth. Implants are put into place and remain in place. They do not move around and irritate the soft tissues of the inside of the mouth.
