Dental implants have the same level of functionality as natural teeth. If they become diseased, neglected, do not receive proper dental care from a professional, or fail, they may become infected like regular teeth.
This results from a type of gum disease infection that develops around the implant that is called “peri-implantitis”. Many conditions could cause the issue.
In addition to those previously mentioned, diabetes, immune system compromises, a misalignment of the bite, and even an allergic reaction to the implant itself may cause infection. If this is not properly treated, bone loss may occur and more serious infection may develop.
The Signs
The following outlines the signs that are most commonly associated with a dental implant that has become infected:
- The implant may appear to be loose or it may start to wobble back and forth.
- The gum tissue directly around the dental implant may be swollen and/or red in color.
- You may notice a less-than-favorable taste in your mouth and bad breath may be experienced.
- You may find that the area is throbbing and very painful.
- You may find that pus is present in the area that is sore and swollen.
- You may have a difficult time chewing.
- When you brush your teeth, you may find that the immediate area around the implant starts to bleed.
- It is common to develop a fever with the pain and inflammation.
Receiving a Diagnosis
Your dentist or another type of dental professional will conduct a clinical examination and may also do a radiograph. This will confirm a diagnosis of peri-implantitis. It will also help in determining the progression of the dental implant infection and will help the provider determine the best course of action in the treatment of the infection.
Treatment
In most instances, you will be prescribed a special type of mouth rinse and antibiotics. There are also many types of therapy that may be administered. The following outlines the most common treatments:
- Laser Therapy
- Decontamination of the Surface
- Antimicrobial Therapy
- Mechanical-Based Debridement
The Dangers
If you have peri-implantitis, the infection has the capability of becoming highly aggressive and extremely destructive. It may transition into a systemic illness. In turn, this illness may then cause damage to the heart, as well as other organs within the body.
If treatment is not obtained, a bacterial infection or infections may start to develop in other areas of the body. If you suspect a dental implant infection, you should be evaluated quickly by a dental professional.
When treatments are prescribed, be certain to follow them exactly as outlined and all the way through to completion. Failure to do so could result in additional oral health and/or general health problems.
