What Is Ridge Augmentation?

A ridge augmentation is a procedure commonly performed by a periodontist to re-establish the shape of the jaw and the gums. This is usually performed following the extraction of a tooth.

Tissue is placed or a bone graft is performed in order to successfully fill the remaining void from the tooth that is no longer in place in order to create a healthy area for the placement of a dental implant.

This procedure helps to reduce the possibility of severe bone loss from occurring. In most cases, a periodontist will perform this procedure.

Is Ridge Augmentation Painful?

Once the ridge augmentation has been performed, pain and varying degrees of discomfort may be experienced. This usually subsides significantly by the 3rd day of the healing process.

If pain persists past this time period, you should consult the office that performed the procedure to set up an appointment for evaluation as this could indicate the development of an infection in or around the area that must be treated immediately to avoid further complications.

Is Ridge Augmentation the Same Thing as a Bone Graft?

The bone graft procedure is to stimulate the healing of the bone immediately following a tooth being pulled. The ridge augmentation is different. It is performed on the bone that grew following the initial bone graft. The augmentation simply forms and shapes that bone that was grown from the original bone graft.

What Is Lateral Ridge Augmentation?

In short, lateral ridge augmentation is a treatment that enhances the overall volume of the bone of the location where a patient will – eventually – have a dental implant placed. This is a necessary procedure because the implant will require a base that is sufficient and healthy.

How Is the Ridge Augmentation Performed?

The material that is obtained from a bone graft is carefully placed inside of the socket of the tooth that is missing or has been extracted. In most instances, it is performed immediately following the professional extraction of a tooth so that the patient does not have to undergo two different procedures.

Immediately after, gum tissue is placed over the spot. Then, all of the material is then secured through the use of sutures. In some instances, a space maintenance product may be used to aid in encouraging new bone to grow.

How Long Does Ridge Augmentation Take to Heal?

Recovery time of a ridge augmentation varies from one person to another. In some instances, complete healing may occur in a matter of weeks. In other cases, it could take up in the way of four months for complete healing.
