The gums – medically termed the “gingiva” – are a special type of tissue that surrounds the teeth, providing protection to both the teeth and the bone underneath. The gums form a seal against the teeth that helps to create a barrier that protects the region from infection.
There are certain practices you may perform that will keep this seal tight and completely intact. Failure to engage in these practices will damage the gums and lead to the development of gingivitis.

Use the Right Type of Toothpaste

Next, make sure it has the approval seal from the ADA. Look for the RDA level and make certain it is under 250. Utilize those that advertise helping in the control of tartar. Finally, avoid those that have a high level of sugar.
Brush at Least Twice a Day
Once you have found the right toothpaste, be certain to brush a minimum of twice daily. Many brush their teeth after every meal. This, too, is an effective regimen. While brushing, make certain that you clean the tongue and as much of the interior jaw region as possible.
Remember, all interior areas of the mouth are known to harbor bacteria. The goal is to clean as many of those areas as possible in order to ensure that your gum tissue remains in optimal health.
Choose and Use a Mouthwash
There are several mouthwash products available today that helps to kill bacteria in the mouth, reduce the amount of plaque on and around the teeth, slow the development of tartar, and reduce the chance for the development of gum disease.
Avoid going for just the cheapest or the ones that promise white teeth. Choose the one that offers the most benefits – in terms of your overall oral health. Like toothpaste, choose the ones that contain fluoride and the seal of the ADA.
Watch Your Diet
Everything that goes into the mouth has an impact on your oral health. If you want to keep your gums healthy, be certain to watch your diet. Consume items that help to clean the mouth, increase the production of saliva, reduce bacteria, and contain fluoride.
Examples include fruits that are high in fiber, green teas, milk, and some seafood products. Avoid foods and beverages that contain citric acids, sugars, starches, and sticky substances. You should also avoid alcohol-containing products, be it food, beverages, or medications.
See a Dentist Regularly
To keep your gums healthy, your mouth must be healthy. To have a completely healthy mouth, you must see a dentist regularly.
