If you are reading this, chances are, you are missing teeth and you are a bit self-conscious about that. You may even be a bit hesitant about wearing dentures. The good news is, there is a productive alternative that you may find appealing and beneficial, that is, dental implants.

What Is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are anchors that resemble that of a screw or a type of cylinder. They serve as an artificial type of replacement for the root of the natural tooth. These may be used in both the upper and lower jaw region.

Once attached to the gum tissue and the jawbone, they become a type of highly stable base for an artificial tooth. The artificial tooth is referred to as a “dental crown”. These have been used in the dental industry for several decades now.

These are not removable and no adhesives are necessary. They aid in restoring the ability to use the mouth for chewing, speaking, and fill in the face so that no sunken spots appear where teeth are missing.

Are Dental Implants the Right Choice for Me?

If you are in relatively good health, your gum tissue is healthy, and you have the right amount of bone to fully support the fixture, you are considered to be an ideal candidate for a dental implant.

In addition to the previously-mentioned criterion, you must be able to schedule regular checkups and visit to your dental care provider and you must be willing to commit to a comprehensive oral hygiene regimen.

If you qualify and are able to meet the necessary commitments, you should make an appointment with your dental care provider to discuss getting dental implants for your missing and/or diseased teeth today.

What Is the Process for Dental Implants?

Dental implant treatment is typically a three-part process that goes over the course of many months. The process is as follows:

  1. The implant is surgically placed in the jaw with a screw in place to prevent various type of debris from entering. Immediately thereafter, the gum is secured directly over the dental implant. Over a period of three to six months, the implant fuses with the bone.
  2. Once all is fused and healed, the dental professional will uncover the implant and add an extension or “post” to the device. The gum tissue will then go through the process of healing around this addition. This is the foundation for the artificial tooth that will -eventually -be put into place.
  3. Finally, a crown is made that matches the other teeth within your mouth and then attached to the post that was put into place previously.
