The Two Types of Harmful Bacteria in The Mouth 

It is a known fact that colonies of various types of microbes live within the mouth. These include germs that are bacterial-based and fungal-based. It is also true that many of these are helpful to your oral health. Of course, many are harmful. The harmful microbes may lead to the development of gum disease and the decay of the teeth. 

There are about 700 different species of various microorganisms in the mouth that are present on the teeth, the pockets between the gum tissue and the teeth, and on the tongue. These feed on sugars that are introduced to the mouth and leave behind debris. This can then turn to acid and destroy your oral health. Streptococcus Mutans

This is a common type of bacteria. It is known to reside directly on the surface of the teeth. It is also found in the pits and the various fissures that are on each of your teeth. This type of bacteria feeds on the starches and the sugars that you consume. Eventually, it leads to the development of cavities.

This happens due to the fact that the bacteria produce acids that directly erode the teeth. According to research, this type of bacteria is the main cause of the development of tooth decay within the human mouth. 

Porphyromonas Gingivalis 

This type of bacteria is not one that is present in the mouth very often. If the oral health suffers and it makes itself known, it can lead to the development of the condition known as periodontitis. This is a type of inflammatory disease that is quite serious.

It directly impacts the tissues of the mouth and the bone that provides the support for all of the teeth in the mouth. If not treated immediately, this type of bacteria may grow so rapidly in the mouth that it results in the loss of teeth, severe dental pain, and other complications. 

Steps to Control Bacteria in the Mouth 

There are several steps that may be taken that will aid in controlling the bacteria in the mouth. The following outline these simple steps:

  1. First, be sure to use an electric toothbrush and brush your teeth twice a day with a toothpaste that includes fluoride. 
  2. You should clean the area in between each of the teeth with a specially-designed interdental device. 
  3. You should ensure that you use antibacterial mouthwash several times a day. For optimal protection, use it before and immediately after brushing your teeth and throughout the day when you are unable to brush. 
  4. Avoid consuming foods that contain a high amount of sugar and starch. 
  5. Consume foods that encourage the growth of good bacteria – such as yogurt and pickles.
